Job Description

What does ORR do? The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) transfers unaccompanied children from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) into the care and custody of a safe sponsor. By doing this, we are able to help children in need become integrated members of American society.

How can you help children in need? As a case coordinator, it will be your responsibility to track new placements and the progress of minors in ORR funded care while keeping records on case statuses. You will incorporate child welfare principles as well as take into consideration the unusual nature of each child's situation, when making placement decisions. Over the course of each placement, you will visit care provider sites to conduct weekly interviews with children and when necessary, will complete a release or transfer recommendation to an environment that is in the best interest of the child.

What else will you be responsible for?

  • Writing reports on progress and any issues related to program trends.

  • Assisting care providers and ORR to recognize potential victims of trafficking and refer them to ORR.

  • Ensuring that all eligible children are referred for benefits and services and collaborate with care providers to build safety plans for each child.

  • Referring legal provider, DHS, or other partner inquiries requiring Government attention to the ORR designee.

  • Refer release reconsiderations or case file requests by minors’ attorney to ORR.


  • While you may work from home, you will be handling cases in the Phoenix, AZ area

*You will need to undergo a fingerprint background check by the customer for clearance to work with unaccompanied alien children.


  • Requires a BS/BA degree or a Master’s degree in Social Work or a related field


  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish (will be tested)

  • Requires 2-5 years post-graduate experience based on degree.

  • If BSW, five years of post-graduate child welfare, social service, case management and/or mental health professional experience

  • If MSW, two years of post-graduate child welfare, case management, social service, and/or mental health professional experience.

  • Experience working with immigrant, refugee, and underserved populations is preferred
