General Dynamics Information Technology In Vivo Research Laboratory Technician in Silver Spring, Maryland
GDIT is seeking anIn Vivo Antiparasitic Efficacy Lab Technicianto provide support to the Department of Drug Discovery within the Experimental Therapeutics (ET) Branch of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). The mission of the Deparment of Drug Discovery is the discovery of novel therapeutics for the prevention and cure of malaria, leishmaniasis, and antibiotic resistant bacteria. The employee will provide support for the testing of in vivo antiparistic efficacy in rodents.
Responsibilities will include:
Perform animal studies of antileishmanial drugs with prophylactic effect and liver-stage efficacy using in vivo imaging system (IVIS).
Perform compound efficacy and toxicity animal studies of antimalarial drugs with therapeutic effect on blood-stage efficacy by using Thompson Test.
Conduct in vivo leishmaniasis toxicity testing.
Calculate and formulate antiparasitic drugs for these studies that are appropriate for multiple routes of administration, including inter-peritoneal (IP), orally (PO), and intra-muscularly (IM).
Collect blood samples and perform clinical observations in the animal models assessing toxicity (body weight loss, behavior activity, urine excretion, e.g.).
Analyze and summarize experimental data from the imaging system for reports, publications, and presentations.
Assist in the preparation of IACUC protocols and amendments as required.
Ensure that all lab equipment is maintained and serviced as required.
Physical Capabilities:Work may involve long periods of standing and handling of BSL2 level infectious agents, toxic chemicals, and blood-borne pathogens. Work will require the ability to operate research equipment requiring manual dexterity. The ability to handle research animals is also needed.
Work environment: Biosafety Level (BSL) 2 laboratory and animal BSL 2 laboratory. Potential exposure to infectious agents, toxic chemicals, and blood-borne pathogens. Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Will also work in an office setting. Occasional flexible schedules (weekends/evenings) may be required.

Bachelors Degree in a scientific discipline.
MS in Microbiology, biomedical field or related field.
RLATG - Registered Laboratory Animal Technologist, RLAT - Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (AALAS), or ALAT - Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (AALAS) certification preferred.
0-2 years of related experience in scientific research, analysis and/or engineering.
Experience conducting animal studies, handling laboratory animals, and performing the tasks listed in the job responsibilities.
